Budding Artists Brighten Southwark

In the summer of 2009 a group of young people engaged through the Camberwell YIP in Southwark came together to make a difference at the Bethwin Adventure Playground, a popular spot for the younger children living in the local area to play.

One perimeter fence within the grounds was dull and in need of some attention and the young people decided that a mural would uplift the space and make it a more enjoyable place to use for them and for the entire community.

Working with Positive Arts, London based professional street artists the young people had a brainstorming session and decided that a rainforest theme would best suit the space, with lots of tropical plants and animals. They sketched up some ideas and along with the artists a base plan was put down on the fence.

After learning about the health and safety issues involved with painting the young people set to work adding colour to the mural and totally transforming the space.

Faye King, the Centre Manager for the space said, "It's fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I look out of my office window and say ohhhh. I'm so impressed by the young people; they have been focussed, followed instructions and are proper interested. They want to see the end result and tell people what they have done."
